Sunshine and shopping

It seems that the sunshine has finally decided to make an appearance here in Britain, let's all take a moment to rejoice!

With the weather getting warmer I think the time has come for me to invest in some summery clothes -  my wardrobe is primarily jackets and jumpers at the moment - but at as low a cost as possible. I'm saving for numerous summery trips out and so the money factor is quite crucial!

With that in mind, I headed out with two of my girls into town yesterday and went on a thrifting tip! You all know that it's one of my favourite past times (and now times...and future times) so with the sun shining I couldn't have wished for a better day out. Plus, I did pick up some rather amazing bargains too.

Firstly for £1.95 I got this light, almost sheer, white top. I think that it epitomises warm weather wear! The simple nature of it also makes it extremely versatile; I can see it with jeans, denim shorts or even over a maxi dress.

I'm on a bit of a fashionista hippy tip at the moment, so when I saw this woven and fringed bag I couldn't resist. It was £3.50 and I can see it becoming a regular in my casual wardrobe. I adore the detail that's all over it, especially the delicate beading.

It's hard to explain these trousers. They are a light material and once on they're high waisted and have a billowy fit. When I first bought these home I had slight buyers remorse, but after wearing them today I fell in love all over again.

Probably my favourite buy from yesterday was this floral silk cami top. It's so dainty and just adorable! It buttons at the front and has thin spaghetti straps which means it'll work either under or over any other clothing. I can't wait to wear this beauty!

Fitness not fashion

I’ve never been a sporty person. In fact, while doing PE at school I would often be the one you found hiding behind crowds of people in attempts to get out of playing, or on the floor after being made to play and falling over. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I don’t want to be amazing at football or basketball or netball, I’m just not. This lead to much embarrassment and certificates from PE staff that stated “Bethany has been given this award for trying her best this term”. We all know what that means.

Regardless of my inability to be successful at any kind of sport (unless shopping is a sport?) I’ve recently been pushing myself to get fit and healthy. It’s not a case of attempting to loose weight, but I feel that healthy means happy, and surely the pursuit of happiness is what life’s about. So I’ve been making some changes. My diet and exercise routine, or lack thereof, have both been under scrutiny and I’ve made some small, manageable changes in attempts to boast my health.

Obviously, I’m no health expert but I thought I’d share with you some tips that have helped me out. Who knows, maybe they will help one of you too!

Exercise:

Finding what works:
As I mentioned before, I’m truly terrible at group sports, so there’s no way I would ever join an amateur footy club. Instead, I decided to try something that is more independent and it seems to have worked – running. I’m not fast and I can’t go for a long period of time, but it sure beats sitting on the sofa.

If you don’t enjoy the exercise your doing the chances of you completing a workout are severely decreased. Running and jogging gives me a chance to tidy my mind; many blog posts have been written whilst pounding that pavement! That makes it the perfect form of exercise for me, as I feel I’m not only working out but I’m also doing something I enjoy.

I usually run for about 30 minutes (with a few breaks) but also do some general muscle workouts when I get home – crunches, squats, planks – which I will admit is less fun. Each rep only lasts about 30 second though, so it’s over before you know it!

It’s really a case of finding what suits you. Try running, swimming, the gym, yoga, or workout DVDS. Everything. Eventually you’ll find what works for you and getting active won’t seem so much of a chore. Even if it’s dancing around your living room for half an hour like a maniac, moving is moving and will ultimately lead to a healthier you.

And stretch...
Never forget to stretch before and after every single workout. It doesn’t matter how strenuous your exercise routine is, allowing your muscles to stretch is absolutely essential. Here’s a basic stretching program that I found online.

As much as going straight into a workout may save time, in the long run you could be left injured and unable to do any kind of activity for a prolonged period. That could completely mess with your exercise plan.

Tumblr

I’m not encouraging you to sit on your laptop all day instead of working out, although resting is important, but I has found a great motivational tool in the form of Tumblr. Surprisingly, some of my best workouts have been because of the pictures and quotes I've seen online. I feel that the “Fitblr” and “fitspo” community are a really encouraging group, that can help you achieve the best of your fitness ability as well as healthy eating.

Here are some of my favourite health inspiring blogs:

Food:

Eat:
It’s very simple, you have to eat. No matter how determined you are to loose weight, cutting food or meals completely won’t help at all. It will mean that your body won’t have the nutrients it needs to function. This could lead to an inability to perform any kind of exercise successfully, so you could actually be making yourself gain instead!

Just remember, your body needs fuel. You don’t have to deprive yourself of the food you love! You can still eat chocolate and cake just as long as, I know you've heard it before, it’s all in moderation.

Keep it smooth:
Fruit and vegetables aren't as appealing as a chocolate bar or packet of crisps, I know. Still, I have discovered a fail safe way of getting some of those essential 5-a-day. Smoothies! Lately, I’ve been having smoothies or fruity milkshakes almost everyday. After seeing this creation chart on a fitblr, coming up with ideas for combinations has been a lot easier.

If smoothies aren't your thing you still have to work superfoods into your diet. These include – Kale, avocado, nuts, dark chocolate and blueberries. Simply type “healthy recipes using [insert superfood here]” and a world of good nutritious food will open up.

Drink to good health
Water. Lots and lots of water. It’s very important to give your body around 2 liters of fluid every day, preferably good old H20! Green tea also has amazing health benefits and is an alternative to normal tea or the caffeine filled hot drinks that we Brits love to relax with. If you’re looking for something to do the opposite of relax you, something to drink during a workout, go for milk if you don’t want water. The minerals are proven to help regain energy, much like a sports drink.

Always search for the lesser of two evils. If you don’t want a drink like water or milk, then always check the labels of soft drinks for sugar, fat and salt content. Bare in mind though that drinks of a higher sugar content may have other health benefits. For example, a smoothie will always be better than a coke zero!

Trust me, If I, the uncoordinated and originally extremely unfit chocolate adict can improve my health, so can you!

Good luck,

The magazine debate

"Maybe you should put down the mindless magazines, Bethany." - The words of a teacher regarding me reading Vogue between classes which have long since they were said, about three months ago, echoed through my brain at intervals. It was the first time that I truly noticed the negative connotations attached to magazines, specifically those focused on fashion. It seems that the whole industry has a stigma that leaves people believing that Vogue, InStyle, Company and the like are unstimulating, unintelligent and act as a contaminant in the world of literature.

I can only assume that those who conform to such opinions have never actually read or even considered reading a high end fashion magazine. Those mentioned above are a far cry from brainless. The articles are in fact quite the opposite of unstimulating, often delving deeply into the social reasoning behind particular trends and fashion occurrences. Not only that, but the writing always has a subtle beauty about it; each article acts as an elongated poem with a handsome use of structure, vocabulary and flow. Just through looking at a single issue of Vogue, words including patrician, fripperies, regale, diligence and emulate can be read (July’s issue in case you were wondering). Hardly the “OMGs” and “LOLs” that are perhaps expected.

This extensive use of vocabulary means that the magazines are fairly intellectually stretching, especially for young readers such as myself, still constantly learning new lexicon. As though the varying language isn’t enough, it’s undeniable that my love of fashion magazines has improved my ability to write vastly in other areas too. I feel as though I’m now capable of compiling well structured, thought out and concise articles when required.

Even those magazines that are aimed at an audience in less want of something hugely stretching manage to raise social and ethical issues in their articles.  For example, recent issues of Company (a personal favourite of mine) have looked at feminism in modern day society and the pressure on women to maintain a low weight in today’s world. Yet, among such serious topics, they manage to keep the magazines entertaining. Sprinkled in between the heavier articles are light hearted interludes which make such magazines invaluable as part of how I relax. At such points abbreviations are totes more acceptable!

So, whether I’m looking for something to completely stimulate my brain with intellectually brilliant articles, or am more on the lookout for relaxing entertainment that still doesn’t become fatuous, there’s always a magazine I can turn to.
Even those sections of fashion magazines with no writing whatsoever – the photo shoot spreads – still provide some benefit.  Through my many years of close magazine analysis, I feel that most of the fashion shoots have inspired me in some way. They’ve encouraged me to be creative in the way I dress which has in turn, improved my confidence in everyday life. They also allow the reader to explore many aspects of modern culture further improving their social awareness. Plus, surely only positive effects can come of allowing your eyes to roam over something so beautiful!

Perhaps out of all the copious benefits I could list that come of reading fashion magazines, for me the main one is simple - I enjoy them. From cover to cover I get a sense of excitement and pure happiness. For some time, I’m able to focus on a topic I love and stretch my mind in the way I wish to, which prepares me for other challenges later on.
“Maybe you should put down the mindless magazines, Bethany.”
“No thank you sir, I find them to be rather beneficial, actually.”

Stick it to the man

A few months ago in Company (one of my many monthly fashion magazine purchases) one particular page caught my attention. Among the spreads on clothes and lifestyle topics, on that beautiful paper that makes Company so desirable, was a single page entitled "Stick 'em up".

Perhaps one of the main reason it appealed to me was the nostalgia that it bought on. It depicted a large metallic gold clutch bag covered in the kind of stickers I, and probably most other youngsters, put on just about anything! My sister - she's only 2- is just as sticker obsessed as I was. I think it's something every child goes through, a right of passage if you will, in which they stick lions and dinosaurs and butterflies on stationary and walls and faces. So, the idea of smothering an oversized clutch with "puffy stickers" appealed to 8 year old me, who managed a few weeks later to convince 16 year old me to go for it and spend £5 on a mix of 3D stickers, diamonds and googly eyes in preparation.

I decided to use my large silver clutch bag with neon zip and studding (H&M) as the base of my masterpiece! Then, I took out my collection of distastefully large diamonds and pearls, childlike dinosaurs and sea creatures, and either creepy or hilarious googly eyes ready to randomly spread over the bag. The result? A rather insane accessory with the ability to transport you to a time of screaming "you're it" and never letting your Tamagotchi out of your sight, that somehow still manages to have a supreme modernism about it. I can see it slotting, or should I say sticking, into my wardrobe perfectly!

OOTD: A taste of the future

It's odd to think about the fact that within the next few months my life will have completely changed. I will be leaving behind my path for the past five years which ultimately lead to GCSEs, and will begin my trek in the direction of A-Levels in year 12. Even more so, it's strange to contemplate a school life in which some of my closest friends may not be. Many of those who I've grown to love are likely to be heading off to new schools, leaving a space where their beautiful personalities used to be.

As sad and scary as the thought of the future may be, I possess an overwhelming feeling of optimism. The prospect of doing subjects that I absolutely love - English Lit, English Language, History and RE - makes me more than excited to move on in the world of school.

Something that seemed to even further fuel my sanguine expectations was taking part in my 6th form experience day. I got the opportunity to have taster lessons of the options I'm taking and also had the chance to meet some of those who I will be spending the next 2 years with. Just as I hoped, the teachers were successful in provoking enthusiasm within me and made me want to soak up literature and historical dates and prominent social events and religious philosophy instantly. The whole day meant that I'm now capable of seeing beyond the lengthy summer holidays without an underlying sense of worry. In fact, I can stare forward with a smile on my face.

As though the idea of no longer having to do subjects which have stirred hatred within me for the past few years (maths and chemistry mainly) isn't enough, I also get to say goodbye to wearing a school uniform. Since we were essentially taking on the role of sixth formers for the day we of course got to wear our own clothes. A perfect OOTD opportunity, I'm sure you'll agree!

Prom: The night of nights

I've been looking forward to my prom night since at least 5 years ago. I suppose it was growing up with the romanticised depictions of American proms flashed over the Disney Chanel that caused it! Something about the whole event just seemed magical. For the past few months the excitement has been ever growing, all leading up to the long awaited night which happened to fall yesterday.

I thought it was only right to share my  prom wear with you along with pictures of some of my absolutely gorgeous friends in their absolutely gorgeous dresses!

My dress was a champagne lace with black floral embroidery. It had a short underlay and was ever so slightly higher at the front than the back which made it perfect for showcasing my cutout black pumps. The whole outfit had a laid back vintage feel, which I love and so continued with a messy fishtail plait.

Current obsessions

It seems like far too long since I've shown you all what I've been lusting after on the high street! I decided that today, whilst relaxing and preparing for prom, I had the perfect opportunity to do just that.  In today's list we have a pair of basket ball shorts, a neon nighty and a tartan suspender skirt. An odd collection indeed, but some of the most amazing pieces I've been in love with for quite some time.

Topshop
What do you get when you mix a goth and a vintage loving girly girl? This dress of course! Despite its dark colour and slightly eerie touches, the dress is profoundly girly. I imagine it with floral headbands and delicate sandals.

Topshop

I don't like sports. In fact, I hate the majority of it. I do however, rather like these denim basketball shorts. I won't be running around in them but I would wear them with a plain white t-shirt and some gold chunky jewelry and trainers. They could even work with a pair of simple two strap stilettos to step up the style factor a little more.

Topshop

You all know how obsessed I am with white at the moment so, as you can imagine, when my eyes fell upon this sleek almost origami skirt I fell head over heels. Its versatility is undeniable. I just need it in my life!

Tosphop

This kind of looks like a neon nighty. I find that quite appealing for some reason. I can see this with a pair of chunky trainers and some insanely un-elegant jewelry to contrast with the delicate silk! In terms of a lazy summer dress, this is one of the best I've seen.

Miss Guided

Did someone say clueless? Ah yes, it was the 90s loving section of my brain calling out to this Miss Guided beauty! It was inevitable that I would fall in love with this tartan suspender skirt, let's be honest. I don't think I need to explain why, you all know the extent to which I will go to to achieve a 90s look!

Lashes of London Edit

Yes, I do have the skater dress in this print (here)... Would it be greedy to want the shorts too?! The adorable unicorn print and neon trim is just too irresistible. Plus, they're on sale!

What are you lusting after at the moment?
